Jazz Impressions Dinner and Dance on February 14

The Plymouth Arts Council puts together a first-class Valentine’s Day event.
Davina and the Vagabonds entertain guests at this year's Valentine event at Plymouth Creek Center.

Each fall, Plymouth Arts Council jazz chairwoman Wilma Pryor coordinates the Jazz Impressions concert. Attendance has increased every year, but the arts council wants more: “We want to break out,” volunteer Theresa Ziegler says. “There are residents who don’t even know there is a Plymouth Arts Council; we are going to change that.”

With this goal in mind, Pryor is teaming with recreation supervisor Alyssa Krumholz to expand Jazz Impressions into a full-blown Valentine’s Day event, complete with “a first-class venue, first-class food [from Mintahoe Catering] and a first-class band,” Ziegler says.

The dinner-dance starts at 7 p.m. in the Plymouth Creek Center ballroom. “It’s a very romantic atmosphere,” Ziegler says, adding food is served buffet-style. “It’ll be like going to a fabulous nightclub.”

The real highlight, of course, is the music. Jazz Impressions will feature rising stars Davina and the Vagabonds. The blues-jazz band got its start in Minnesota and maintained a strong presence here, even after international acclaim including being named “break-out band of the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2013. Ziegler is a devoted follower, and she convinced the band to come to Plymouth. “If you want great jazz you can dance to,” Ziegler says, “it has to be Davina and the Vagabonds.”

So why is the Plymouth Arts Council stepping up its game? “We want to promote all community interaction,” Ziegler says, “and what better way is there to build community than getting together and having a great time?”
