There’s no better way to give back to a community than by volunteering. In less than four years, Plymouth resident John Olson has contributed more than 130 hours of volunteer time to help his community. Plymouth’s volunteer coordinator Jackie Maas says that Olson always helps everyhing run smoothly, and his work with Boy Scout training distinguishes him as a true leader. “He’s always so calm and great at providing direction for the other volunteers,” Maas says.
After retiring from his job as a truck product manager, Olson says he is busier now in retirement than he ever was while working. “I think I actually get more out of it than I put into it,” says Olson, discussing why he so greatly appreciates all the opportunities to volunteer.
Olson has volunteered with Boy Scouts of America, the Schwan’s USA Cup Soccer Tournament and Life Time Fitness’ running program. Olson also sings with the Plymouth Rockers and plays in the Plymouth Community Band. While he volunteers in many different fields, Olson most enjoys the work he does with Boy Scouts. “It’s a quality program that helps make changes in so many young lives,” he says. He describes how the Boy Scouts of America had an impact on his son’s life. The experience his son gained in Boy Scouts helped guide him when he was a soldier in Iraq.
Every year, Olson volunteers at many Plymouth events. The Primavera Arts Festival is always a favorite. Along with Primavera, Olson volunteers with the Plymouth Art Fair, the Spring Expo, Christmas in Plymouth and the Pancake Breakfast.
