Top Five Ways to Stay Active in Plymouth

Top five activities perfect for a Minnesota winter
Fatbiking makes for a great aerobic workout.

This month’s cold weather doesn’t mean you can’t be active: Check out these five winter sports that embrace the unique challenges and conditions created by a Minnesota winter.

  1. Winter Running: Paved paths through the Twin Cities and Plymouth are perfect for running, in sun or snow. Luke Carlson, a trainer at Discover Strength, says that winter running offers the same benefits, but reminds runners to dress for the cold and the dark—layers and reflective clothes are a must.
  2. Fatbiking: Similar to mountain biking, fatbiking takes riders over generally groomed and varied wooded terrains for a great aerobic workout. The distinctive large tires disperse the weight, allowing you to almost “float” over the snow. Fatbiking is allowed on any multi-use trail and requires a specialized bike.
  3. Nordic Skiing: Alex McKinney, recreation supervisor for the Three Rivers Park District, describes cross-country skiing as “such a cool way to experience the parks.” You can rent skis at French Regional Park—a daily trail pass at both French and Eagle Lake regional parks is $5.
  4. Skijoring: Take “walking the dog” to a whole new level by strapping on a pair of skis and testing out skijoring. A harness and pull line allow your dog to pull you behind as they run for a great workout. Eagle Lake Regional Park allows skijoring and offers training classes.
  5. Sledding: Grab your sleds, saucers or toboggans, and get your kids active by planning a fun day of sledding. McKinney recommends the groomed hill at French Regional Park as the perfect place for your family winter adventures.
