Get to know some of our community's outstanding seniors: Moses Ekel, Madeline Anderson
Gavin Frank
Wayzata High School
What has been your high point so far in your academic career?
My high point was also my most difficult point. I had heard the Romeo and Juliet unit was a killer, and it was. I tried to remember every little detail but always ended up guessing on the quizzes. I worked hard throughout the unit and did much better on the final test. It was the most excited I had been getting my test results back.
What are your main academic interests and why?
Math and science. This year I took Calculus AB and BC, AP Biology, and Chemistry X (honors). I like how in calculus not everything is black and white. I’ll get the same answer as the teacher but in a different way. For science, I like knowing how things work and are connected. For instance, concepts from biology bleed into chemistry.
What’s something that people would be surprised to learn about you?
I failed my driving test. I was a parking wizard, made sure to come to complete stops, everything the perfect student should do. There was a notorious evaluator at the Plymouth DVS. Everyone who took the test mentioned this man who failed everyone. I thought, “How could he fail everyone?” Sure enough, he failed me. I’m sure I’m biased, but I swear I did nothing wrong. I painfully waited a week to retest and passed the second time.
What advice would you give someone just beginning high school that you wish someone has given you?
Extracurriculars have enriched my high school experience. Get involved in clubs and activities because you want to, not because you think it’ll look good for college.
Who is one person who has influenced you most to excel, and why?
It’s not just one person—it’s my friend group. We’re all supportive of each other and pretty successful in school. Last year, I competed with my friend Ben for who could get the higher math percentage each quarter. We pursue leadership opportunities, and bounce ideas off each other before interviews. A few of us who have a lot of overlapping commitments remind each other of meetings and activities the day before. My friend group has shaped my path in high school and supported me along the way.
What is your special power?
My sister says it’s being annoying. I think it’s that I learn quirky skills. For example, I can ride a unicycle, stack dice and solve a Rubik’s Cube in under one minute.
What are your main interests outside of academics?
Juggling. It’s a unique hobby, and you can do it anywhere. I’ve juggled three balls, four balls, flaming pins, on a unicycle and 12-pound shot puts—not all together. I also run a juggling group to teach others. I play basketball for fun. I coached a sixth-grade basketball team this year to a championship victory with my friend Umar. In spring, I throw shot put and discus on the track and field team.
What are your plans after graduation?
A road trip with my friends. Long term, I’m thinking about pursuing business at college while still learning more about math and science, but none of that is set in stone.
