A Share of Sunshine

Plymouthites have the opportunity to invest in solar power—without home remodeling.

Many in Plymouth are prepping their container gardens for the start of spring and the upcoming growing season, but not as many have heard about the shareable solar gardens not that far away.

Through Xcel Energy’s solar rewards community program, Colorado-based SunShare is able to build solar gardens that connect to Xcel Energy’s grid in Wright, Hennepin and additional counties, and sell subscriptions to the solar gardens to Xcel customers. It’s a new initiative here, but one that is going strong in Colorado.

“Community solar is the concept that Hennepin County residents can go solar without putting solar panels on their roofs,” says Kate Laursen, public relations manager for SunShare. “Anyone, whether they own their home, rent, or live in an apartment or condo, can choose to purchase solar energy from solar gardens, while Xcel Energy continues to deliver the electricity.” Customers who choose to do this receive credits on their regular bills. To participate, Plymouthites should visit the Sunshare website or call SunShare at 612.345.8881.
