In 1999, Interfaith and Community Partners’ Spread Your Wings Gala looked a bit different than it does now.
“The first theme was birdhouses; that’s how the gala first got its name,” says Janet Schutz, who co-chairs the event with Rima Torgerson.
Of course, the name of the gala also speaks to what IOCP does for its clients. On June 25, Spread Your Wings will bring local businesses and private donors together at the Minneapolis Marriot Northwest (black tie not necessary). This year’s theme is Super Powers Unite, in which attendees will celebrate the power of the community to create opportunities for more than 1,800 low-income families.
The emcee, KARE-11 sports anchor Eric Perkins, will guide gala guests through the fundraising event, which includes a sign up for exciting experiences.
“Experiences have ranged from paddleboard lessons and a steak dinner to belly dancing lessons at our Middle Eastern Night,” says Schutz.
Lastly, but most importantly, guests will hear the firsthand story of an IOCP client transformed by the organization’s help.
“It helps people understand what IOCP is all about: not just giving people a hand out, but a hand up,” says Schutz.
