Amid the blustery winds, the sound of bluegrass can be faintly heard in Plymouth this month. You’re not dreaming; it’s the annual Winter Bluegrass Weekend. Every March, a festival of bluegrass and old-time music and dance descends on the Crowne Plaza Hotel to warm you up with concerts, dances, workshops, vendors and spontaneous jam sessions. “It’s a good time to lock yourself indoors on a winter weekend,” says Jed Malischke, executive director of the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time Music Association.
The highlight of the weekend is the Saturday night headline concert featuring The Becky Buller Band. Buller grew up in southern Minnesota and studied classical violin, but her heart was always with the fiddle. Her compositions have been recorded by Ricky Skaggs (“Music To My Ears”), Rhonda Vincent (“Fishers of Men”), Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver (“Be Living”), Josh Williams (“You Love Me Today”), and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out (“My Angeline” and “Rest My Weary Feet”).
If you can’t make it out this time around, the Cabin Fever Festival will be held in Duluth from March 20–22.
