Who can say no to an event where one can support a community-driven music initiative while enjoying a glass of wine? For the past eight years, the Plymouth Civic League has partnered with Haskell’s to boost support and funds for the Music in Plymouth Endowment Fund by hosting a wine tasting night, which has since expanded to craft beers and distilled spirits. “We have literally hundreds of wines,” says Mele Willis, public relations coordinator for Music In Plymouth.
In addition to wine, craft beers and spirits, hor d’oeuvres will be served as well. The event features live music by renowned trumpeter and Minnesota Orchestra member Charles Lazarus and a jazz quartet.
Willis says that the goal was to “figure out a way to have a fun event that builds awareness and raises funds.” This year’s event is expected to draw in around 300 attendees, both wine aficionados and music fans. “We have a lot of folks who come back year after year,” says Willis.
The Music In Plymouth Endowment Fund was established in response to a need to secure longevity for the organization. “The idea was just that any healthy nonprofit looks to how to secure their financial future, other than donated revenue,” says Willis. The non-profit organization has largely run on contributions made by the Plymouth community since it launched in 1972. “From the start, Music In Plymouth has provided a small community a sense of identity, a sense of core and purpose,” says Willis. “Over the years, it has enjoyed very broad grassroots support.”
