Newcomers clubs are common in many communities, but the Suburban West Area Newcomers Club (SWAN) takes a slightly different spin with its membership guidelines and events. This women-only club accepts members who have recently moved or who have experienced a recent lifestyle change, such as retirement. Members gather about once a month for various events, whether it’s playing bridge or grabbing coffee together.
SWAN president Roslyn Pullman says the club’s events serve an important social function, even though they may vary in popularity. “If you go and do something once a month and the same people show up, then you get to know them and I think that’s a very helpful thing,” she says.
Originally from Australia, Pullman became involved with newcomer clubs as she moved across the United States with her family. She has been active with SWAN since 2012, serving as president since June 2015.
Common SWAN events include bridge, mahjong, lunch and dinner clubs, wine nights and other various meetings. Members also volunteer throughout the year, making sandwiches and blankets for those in need. The club serves areas including, but not limited to Plymouth, Maple Grove and Golden Valley, among others. Always open to welcoming new members, Pullman suggests attending a “Just Coffee” meetup to begin getting involved with SWAN.
SWAN serves a variety of areas. Those interested in SWAN can attend two events prior to joining. Membership is $20–$25 and includes the group newsletter with planned events.
