Picture Plymouth: A Love for Capturing the Outdoors

Gloria Rice enjoys taking photographs in her own backyard.

Gloria Rice has had an interest in photography for 35 years. She says that it probably stems from her parents, who were always taking pictures when she was growing up. This love for photography has not only developed into a favorite hobby of hers, but it has won her a spot in the Picture Plymouth Photo Contest in years past.

Rice mainly takes pictures of plants and wildlife, combining her love of art and nature. Many of the pictures are from her backyard, where she enjoys gardening and spending time outside.

Her photo that won second place in the wildlife category for the 2016 contest is titled “Camouflage.” It is an image of a crab spider crawling on a coreopsis in her garden. “I garden naturally and don’t use pesticides,” Rice says, also adding that she purposely grows plants that are butterfly and hummingbird friendly. “I get up close and personal, so that’s how I saw it.”

Her work can be found on captureminnesota.com and has also been published in the third volume of the Capture Minnesota photography book.
