Photo Contest: Lisa Jabar

Illuminating the magic of the “golden hour.”
Sunset Romance

Water + sunset = photography genius. So says Lisa Jabar, a lifelong photo hobbyist and Plymouth resident since 2002.

Her image, Sunset Romance, is an example of this—but it was luck, really, that brought about its success, Jabar says. “I saw the sunset and ran home for my camera,” she recalls. “I made it just in time … With sunsets, I take a lot of photos from a lot of different angles over about an hour while the sun sets, and expect that the light will register differently on the camera. I never know which one will turn out best.”

By tapping into this hour-long photo shoot from West Medicine Lake Park last summer, Jabar was maximizing what many photo enthusiasts know as the “golden hour,” so named for the warm golden light that drapes the world about an hour surrounding sunset. The park is one of her favorite areas in Plymouth, not just for the photo opportunities but also to walk her dog (three to four days a week) and to serve on Medicine Lake Sailing Club’s race crew twice a week during the summer. “I love anything to do with water, boats and interesting lighting,” she says of her photo inspirations. “[The] park, with the covered bridge, beach, docks and ponds surrounding it offers a lot of wonderful opportunities.”
