Maple Grove High School senior and Plymouth resident Rory Calabria’s journey to Washington, D.C., began when his chemistry teacher recommended that he apply for the American Legion Boys State, a program that introduces high school juniors to legislative proceedings. Although originally chosen as an alternate, a sudden drop-out allowed Calabria to compete. The participants of Boys State learned about elections and legislation at Southwest Minnesota State University, where Calabria was recognized as one of twelve Outstanding Minnesota Boys Staters. A chance opportunity became the experience of a lifetime. From there, Calabria was chosen as one of two Minnesota juniors to travel to the nation’s capital, along with 97 other boys from across the country for the American Legion Boys Nation. The young men explored Capitol Hill and other renowned sites in Washington, D.C., debated legislation on the Senate floor, ran a full national election, and met with President Barack Obama. The best part? “Making connections with 97 other gentlemen from all across the country,” Calabria says. “It’s eye-opening to see there’s so many kids out there doing incredible things.” Now a senior, Calabria is looking forward to college and potentially majoring in sports psychology and journalism.
