Picture Plymouth Photo Contest

The snap-happy contest kicks off next month.

Calling all shutterbugs! Grab your cameras, because our search for the best local photos is about to begin. Between August 1 and 31, aspiring photographers can submit up to three photos of local attractions, animals and more on our website.

The contest began 15 years ago as a way for Plymouthites to share their love of the community—and so the city could build an archive of photos that showcased all the local attractions. The response has been overwhelming, growing from 70 entries in 1996 to nearly 300 in 2010.

Snapshots that nab top honors will be announced in October in five categories: People, Pets, Nature, Events and City Landmarks. And back this year for the second time is the Readers’ Choice award, selected via results from an online voting forum that will run September 10–30 (also on our website). Winners will receive cash and prizes, and select photos will be featured on the city’s website and on the Last Glance page of this magazine throughout 2012. “Even photos that do not win often get a lot of exposure,” says Helen LaFave, communications manager for the city. “It’s great recognition for the photographer and a wonderful way to show your pride in the community.”
