After graduating from Maple Grove High School in 2001, Plymouth native Peter Dering studied civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During college, he spent time in California for an internship and fell in love with San Francisco—and so that’s where he moved after college.
Dering spent a few years working, but felt he needed time off, and decided to take a four-month leave of absence to travel Southeast Asia, India and New Zealand. It was on this trip that Dering became frustrated he didn’t have a safe place to put his camera so it could be hands-free and secure but remain easily accessible for impromptu shots.
A problem-solver by nature, Dering mentally designed his ideal product, but discovered no such thing existed. After a ski trip to Yosemite the following year, Dering ran into the same problems with his camera and decided to quit his job to make his vision a reality.
Dering’s invention, the Camera Capture Clip System hit the market in 2010 and has since sold in 20 different countries. Dering is currently working on more creations, including a shock cord leash which provides a tether between the camera and capture base unit that stays attached to the body.
Today, Dering lives in San Francisco with his girlfriend Ivy Tzur and 7-month-old daughter, Josephine Alma.
