A Winning Photo for May

A fairytale portrayal of a familiar Plymouth pond.
"Greentree Pond"

As a freelance graphic designer and developmental editor, Lu Ann Weiss has managed a photographer and directed photo shoots, but never attempted them herself. Until, that is, her family bought a Canon Rebel Digital SLR two years ago, and Weiss took the classes that came complimentary with the purchase. “I have been shooting hundreds of pictures each month ever since,” she says, to the tune of two backup hard drives. No wonder she got a first-place-winning photo out of the bunch.

“Greentree Pond” was shot toward the south end of Greentree West Pond in the Greentree West Development in spring 2010. “I was drawn outside by the beauty of the early spring color and morning light,” she says. “My favorite secret spot, if you can call it that, is the Greentree Pond Island—I love the iron bridge. I also love Brockton Lane by Holy Name Church in the fall—the trees line up so perfectly along the road.”

Weiss is inspired by her husband Paul and kids, Claire, 10, and Lydia, 5. (They’ve been Plymouth residents for two years, drawn to town from Rogers by the excellent school district, opportunities for extended learning, mature neighborhoods and shorter commutes to work.) She also loves animals and nature. “And I have always been intrigued by the light filtering through a window or flooding the backdrop of an outdoor scene,” she says. “This is the most difficult and frustrating thing to capture!”

& Lu Ann Weiss’s photo, “Greentree Pond,” earned first place in the Wildlife & Nature category of the 2010 Picture Plymouth photo contest. The contest comes back this summer, so get those cameras out today!
