Plymouth Ump Ron Mielke

With more than 25 years of experience, umpire Ron Mielke is a familiar face both on and off the fields.
Longtime umpire Ron Mielke.

It’s nearly impossible for Ron Mielke to leave his house and not run into someone he knows. Since he moved to Plymouth in 1985 and began umpiring for the men’s softball program, Mielke has gained dozens of friends. His fellow umpires know him by name, as do the players, managers and even some spectators. He says it’s nice to have the respect of the people he works with, and the extra friendliness on and off the field is a great bonus.

Mielke got his start umpping in Minneapolis in the early ’80s at the suggestion of his former softball manager. A lifelong baseball player and observer of the sport, Mielke couldn’t resist the opportunity to get more involved. After brief stints throughout the metro, he settled in Plymouth, mostly because of the community, he says: “There are such good people running the program, and the facilities are great.”

Another reason why he’s stayed put? Tradition. “The basic rules are still the same; that’s what makes softball so good. There are no changes year-to-year, and everyone knows that. People really stand by the umpires and give them the recognition [they deserve].”

One of his favorite memories includes umpiring at a game for former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and his team. When they lost by one run, Ventura approached Mielke and made it seem to observers that he was reaming him out, when in reality he was giving the umpire his congratulations. Mielke says he was relieved to see Ventura’s lighthearted side, especially after a tough loss.
