Modern Fashion: Blueberries and Bourbon and Bitters

Rock Elm Tavern offers a recipe for the perfect fall cocktail.

Allie Turner, a manager at Rock Elm Tavern, offers up the perfect cocktail for fall. Its simplicity and underlying berry flavors are a great way to transition from the steamy months of summer to the cool and calm of autumn.

Servings: One

8 berries (mix of blueberries and blackberries to taste)
2 ounces Bulleit bourbon
1/2 ounces simple syrup
6 dashes orange bitters
1 2x2 ice cube, or 2 standard ice cubes

Muddle fruit and simple syrup. (If you don’t have a muddler, sub in the tip of a wooden spoon in a glass: press and twist lightly.)  Add the remaining ingredients and stir well.  Place the ice in your glass, and strain the mixture in. Garnish with an orange peel
and enjoy!

[Ed. Note: You can buy ready-made simple syrup in liquor stores and most supermarkets, but it’s easy to make and store. In a small saucepan, add one cup water and one cup sugar and cook over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved and allow to cool. Pour into a jar and seal tightly with a lid. Keep cold. Refrigerated, it will last about a month. Yield: About one cup.]
