One Foggy Morning
Get inspired by one of last year’s Picture Plymouth winners.
Matt Kauffmann is no stranger to these pages; three of his images have been featured in Plymouth Magazine in the past five years, the last as recently as August.
The award-winning image from Picture Plymouth 2013, Foggy Fall Day, was shot on one of his many early-to-work mornings last October. “I always grab the big camera (DSLR) when there’s fog, since it’s not something we get a lot of here in Minnesota,” he says. “You never know what the sun and clouds and the moon and the lake might be doing on any given day. The picture just sort of made itself; I was just there to capture it.”
Nature inspires much of his photography, he says, and Medicine Lake in Plymouth is the perfect “secret spot” to document it; luckily, it’s close to the home he shares with wife Laura, daughter Audrey and a slew of pets. “I like to be outside as much as possible and having a camera to capture the little details of being outside is a natural extension of that. I don’t buy the notion that if you’re photographing an event, you don’t remember it. You do—you have the pictures to look at. The world is awash in photos,” he says. “I don’t really take pictures to share, but mostly to have for myself and enjoy. If someone sees one of my pictures and likes it, I give them a copy. I’m only a landscape/wildlife photographer when I’m a lucky photographer.”
