Kristen Kennedy’s Award-winning Photo, Imagine

Kristen Kennedy turns to photography to help her view the world differently.

An escape from routine is what Kristen Kennedy finds in photography. As a
registered nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center, she considers it a hobby and
could not help but capture this photo of her goddaughter Makenzie Larson in her
Fourth of July dress while visiting French Lake Regional Park last summer.

As a curious 10-month-old Makenzie sat on the dock taking in the scenery,
Kennedy reflected on all the details to be found if one slows down and gets
close enough to look. She says children see the world from a different vantage
point than adults. “I was trying to capture the world from the eyes of a child,”
Kennedy says. “Sometimes we forget that simple things in life—such as this
fishing dock—are full of wonderful details.”

With her Canon Powershot SX10, Kennedy enjoys photographing subjects in their
natural settings, with minimal use of artificial lighting or props. She says she
is drawn to the innocence, natural beauty, and purity of children and animals.

Kennedy adds that photography allows her to relax and truly appreciate
everything around us: “It is … a way to view my world differently. I enjoy the
beauty of my surroundings, and I love to capture and share the beautiful moments
that I experience.”
