Custom Jewelry Creations

Sara Commers creates new designs from old mementos.
Sara Commers' Tahitian pearl pendant ($8,100) is set with 1.43 carats of diamonds and a 71.2 mm Tahitian pearl in 14 karat gold that is black rhodium-plated, held on a sterling silver multi-strand chain, also black rhodium-plated ($150 extra). But that's not all: Commers also designed her rings.

After taking a class at Minnetonka Center for the Arts in 1999, Sara Commers took a leap and launched into a career in the fine jewelry industry. Fifteen years later, the award-winning jeweler owns Commers Custom Jewelers retail store and workshop in Minneapolis, specializing in custom jewelry design.

In her work, Commers uses either jewelry a customer already has or completely new materials to make the custom creations. “I have had the privilege of making very special pieces of jewelry to commemorate engagements, anniversaries, birthdays and milestones in people’s lives, as well as honoring those who have left us too soon,” she says.

Through the Jewelers of America, Commers is a certified bench jeweler, and she is currently working toward her accreditation as a master bench jeweler. “[The certification] gives consumers confidence that I have passed exams that prove I can perform the many aspects of bench jewelry, from repairs to stone setting and hand-making pieces from raw materials,” Commers says.

Commers enjoys working with customers one-on-one, either creating new designs or reinventing older pieces. “There are many possibilities,” she says. “I welcome ideas from my customers, and we have an extensive portfolio of work to share to inspire.”
