To keep a valuable and potentially life-saving service available to neighbors and the community, the Plymouth Fire Department is thanking the 561 families who have adopted a neighborhood fire hydrant this winter.
According to the city, an estimated 50 percent of hydrants are inaccessible during the winter, so keeping a three-foot radius free of snow and ice keeps firefighters from spending upwards of 15 minutes digging out a buried hydrant.
Beginning this month and continuing through March, firefighters will visit random Plymouth hydrants to see if they’re being properly cared for. If so, the family will be rewarded with a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
