Community Organizations Networking Compassionately Together (CONECT) is seeking volunteers for its twice-weekly homework club meetings, working with area elementary and middle school students in need of help with their school work.
As many as 20 children attend the club on any given night, and with only one staff member on duty, the effectiveness of the services is based almost entirely on the commitment of volunteers.
Katie Jackelen, CONECT’s program coordinator, aims to have four to six volunteers at each meeting. There are resources available for volunteers; no prior tutoring experience is needed. (Translation: Don’t ignore this call to action just because your long-division skills are rusty.)
The club meets at eight Plymouth locations, and meetings happen four nights a week at various times so volunteers can find a sessions that works with their schedule. CONECT asks that volunteers commit to two nights per week for an hour and a half session. As volunteers choose their schedules they try to ensure they’ll work with the same group of children on a regular basis, as one of the most important aspects of this club is the “relationship building,” Jackelen says. “These kids really just want someone to sit down and help them read a book.”
