Plymouth
Home makeovers might be all the rage these days, but Plymouth’s Carolyn Hodgson decided that when it came to building her dream house—a project she took on in 2004—every detail had to be customized from the start.
Working with Chuck Johnson (then of Swanson Homes and currently of J Brothers Home Improvement) and designer Jaque Bethke (PURE Design Environments, formerly COI Design), Hodgson struck a comfortable balance, incorporating exceptional design with a number of unique details that set the house apart while making it a comfortable living space.
The well-traveled owner of Freight Dynamics—a logistics shipping company and fulfillment service—says a Mediterranean theme quickly emerged. “From the stonework around the house and pool to the ornate ironwork that dresses the main door, there are aesthetics of a Mediterranean influence,” she says. “I have always been inspired by European architecture; my love for Italy, Spain and Greece prompted my decisions.”
A stroll through the home highlights just that, plus something else: contemporary details. “The art and sculptures … make the home more current and fun, in my opinion,” Hodgson says.
The great room is a perfect example of this mix, with built-in lighting, custom cabinets and a sectional with two chaise lounges designed specifically for the space. The custom glass side tables were designed by Bethke and, despite their edgy feel, complement the wood accents throughout the room. Distinctive sculptures add a touch of art to mesh with the oversize furnishings.
