Plymouth Civic League Wine Tasting

Haskell’s wine aficionado John Farrell pours a fabulous tasting to support Plymouth Civic League’s Music in Plymouth Endowment Fund next month.

For those thirsting for a good time and a good cause, the Plymouth Civic League—host of Music in Plymouth—will hold its third annual Wine Tasting event October 4 at Plymouth Creek Center.

More than 50 varieties of wine will be featured, hand-selected by knowledgeable Haskell’s staff including vice president of sales and merchandising John Farrell. “In today’s day and age, it’s not difficult to find a wine that will go with anything,” he says. That’s part of the goal of the event: “Every time you pull a cork it’s another adventure.”

The bigger goal, of course, is to provide funds to the Music in Plymouth Endowment Fund, which was established in 2007 to secure the financial future of Music in Plymouth as an annual free community event featuring the Minnesota Orchestra. The fund was seeded with a generous gift from former mayor Al Hilde Jr.; a successful matching gift campaign led by Satellite Industries recently garnered more than $25,000 for the fund, which has a goal of raising $1 million in hopes to grow the event in future years. Attendees will receive a wine glass to commemorate the occasion, as well as hors d’oeuvres, live music and the opportunity to purchase featured wines at discounted prices, as well as raffle tickets and gift basket opportunities.

What’s in a Wine

Possible picks for the Wine Tasting Event courtesy of Haskell’s John Farrell.

Les Ligerienes Rose d'Anjou

This Rose, mostly Grenache grape, is a great cocktail wine for warm weather. Serve right out of the cooler. Light fruit and a dry finish makes this wine great for just about any summer time snacks on a warm day.

Les Rastelains Cotes du Rhone Rose

This Rose, which is a blend of three different grapes, is another wonderful warm weather wine. This one will be a touch dryer than the above, yet goes very well with some of the same foods. This would be well served with salads that have sweetness, with nuts, or a stronger vinagrette.

Touraine Les Roche Blanc

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is a gem. Serve this with any light chicken dish(yes even fried!) or with any fish (the Walleye wine) Pull right from the cooler and be delighted by this light fruit and dry crisp finish.

Vina Robles White 4

Vina Robles is one of Haskell's favorite Paso Robles, CA winemakers. From their Cabernet to this White 4 (an assemblage of 4 grape types, with a slightly fruity finish) Their wines are great great values for the quality of wine they produce!

Les Rastelains Cotes du Rhone Rouge

When it is time for BBQ, Cotes du Rhone's are a great wine to choose. They are blends of Syrah, Grenache (sometimes a third or fourth grape too) They have great body and boldness that can hang with just about any spice or zesty sauce from the grill.

Taleyrac Rive Gauche

It's hard to believe that a great Bordeaux, like this Taleyrac, can be good with beef, ribs, pork, lightly seasoned from the grill and cost as little as it does. (way under $10) This used to be 100% Merlot, yet the winemaker now has this blended with some Cabernet. This wine is also a great introduction to the world of Bordeaux wines.
