Perhaps a Picnic

The rest of us could take a lesson from Milo and Lucy Macdonald and create our own fabulous picnic before the weather turns

Susan Dyrud Macdonald has been taking photos since she was young. “My father was interested in photography, and he shared that interest with me,” she says. “It has been my most favorite hobby for a long time.”

While Dad provided the foundation, it’s the kids who provide the inspiration for Dyrud Macdonald these days. Her two youngest children, Milo and Lucy, prepared this lovely picnic in their front yard last summer—for themselves and by themselves (as evidenced by the chunky chocolate milk served in wine glasses, Dyrud Macdonald notes). “The beauty of the whole scene was the inspiration,” she says.

The Macdonalds have lived in Plymouth for six years (husband Ryan and eldest child Taylor round out the fivesome). Dyrud Macdonald’s “day job” is a new role at Little Flowers Montessori, obtained with her new graduate degree in early childhood education. But we hope she still finds the time to snap pictures of kids being kids—her inspiration becomes ours as the days shorten and the opportunities for a playful picnic dwindle.
