Stages Theatre in Hopkins is a place where young people are immersed in the theatre arts through opportunities onstage, backstage, in the audience and in the classroom. They have been providing quality theatre programming for children for 35 years and are now the third largest non-profit theatre in Minnesota.
Involvement in the arts is important to many people, especially youth. Statistics show that those involved in the arts at a young age show higher levels of motivation, better social skills, more participation and even a higher level of personal well-being. The arts have always been a chance for people to express themselves in ways that are usually not available to them in everyday life. Whether it be painting a picture, baking a cake from scratch or learning lines for a role in an upcoming play, the arts seem to be where it’s at these days.
Equity and equality are important at Stages--their leadership team consists entirely of women. This team was recently awarded the 2018 50/50 Applause Award for playwright gender equality from the International Centre for Women Playwrights. This prestigious award celebrates professional theatres around the world that produce the work of women playwrights 50 percent or more of their season. The amazing women at Stages Theatre foster and instill values in young children that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
This November, catch the popular musical “Mary Poppins,” put on by children of all ages. Bored with their average lives, two siblings find themselves whisked away on marvelous and colorful adventures under the care of a quirky new nanny.
