’Tis the Season to Spruce Up

Ideas for a quick interior fix before the holidays.

Roell Painting is a family-owned and -operated business based in Plymouth, and its principals, Nick Roell and Isaac Vogel, offer these tips for a quick interior spruce up before holiday entertaining begins.

Refinish your kitchen cabinets: With so much emphasis around the kitchen at Thanksgiving time, one great way to spruce up your space is to enamel your kitchen cabinets. While it is no small undertaking, it is a great alternative to full replacement.

Add an accent wall or walls: Liven up a space with bold accent walls that can be a stark contrast to the rest of the room—or can subtly give a room more depth by using two colors in the same family of swatches on a fan deck.

Consider wallpaper: Another popular decorating trend is creating an accent wall with wallpaper (Moorish Lattice designs are popular) or something more rustic-looking, such as reclaimed barn wood.

Change the paint sheen on your walls: If you live in a newly constructed house, chances are your builder used a contractor-grade paint with a flat finish. One of the limitations of flat paint is its lack of washability—for families with young children, washability is a must. Re-coat with a higher-sheen paint (we love Sherwin Williams Cashmere Low Luster).

Paint a chalkboard wall/section: What better way to keep everybody on schedule than with an artsy chalkboard wall? We see these a lot in kitchen areas or mudrooms.
